Some vintage Titans! This is Roy’s return to the team (in 1976) after his drug addiction storyline.
Roy and Donna are impossibly cute here (she’s so happy to see him!), but I think my favorite part is jealous!Wally referring to Roy as “Mr. Amorous Arrow”.
I can’t even. Wally, you are ridiculous. Come here and let me hug you. (It should be noted that Wally historically has had no luck with his Titans teammates, as he was similarly unsuccessful with Raven in the days of NTT.)
And Dick is just like “Yeah, I have no time for any of your romantic shenanigans, we’ve got work to do.” ROFL. Baby, your inner Bruce is showing.
(It’s actually pretty interesting that, for someone who’s considered to be such a sexual character in this day and age, Dick was written as almost aromantic for much of this era. Probably because he was always in Very Serious Leader Mode.)
Also, if anyone is wondering why no one is explicitly talking about Roy’s drug issues… I suspect it’s because Teen Titans was aimed at a younger audience and they weren’t allowed to portray it openly the way they could in the Green Lantern/Green Arrow title. Thus you only have Donna obliquely referencing his “troubles”. (The result, IMO, kind of makes Wally look like a jerk for being more concerned with his romantic prospects than Roy beating his addiction. And Dick just looks downright apathetic for jumping straight to business without so much as a “Hey, Roy, thank God you’re alright”. But you kind of just have to accept that for what it is, I think, and understand that this was something that couldn’t be dealt with in a kid’s comic at that time.)

That is adorable.
I used to LIVE for these stories whenever I could find them in quarter bins!

This is the best line ever. I’m going to have to work this into a conversation sometime.  soon. haha

Unfortunately, the original line was rather less quotable:

(from Batman Family #1)
"Only if your next stop is the Pentagon!" just doesn’t have the same ring, does it? Unless the OP was actually making a clever political zinger there…
It’s a really good Photoshop though, if that’s what it is. I’d never have known it wasn’t the original text, if I didn’t know the original scene. Shut up, what do you mean I’m an obsessive fangirl who memorizes all of Dick and Babs’ dialogue? Noooo…
Maybe they did a reprint which has this version? Hmmm. *is confused*

“You know, Robin — you’re quite attractive as an older man!”

“Really —? Maybe I’ll keep this disguise on for a while…”

[Batman Family V1 #11 (1977) ] Precious favourite dorky babies break the fourth-wall, with a little flirtation thrown in. (I miss Babs being this mature and witty.)

BABS.

BABS WHAT ARE YOU DOING.

He is a young and impressionable teenager! Now is not the time to be corrupting him with your roleplay kinks. THINK OF THE CHILDREN. GEEZ.

(I do appreciate that this is probably the closest I’ll ever come to having Barbara Gordon talk to me, however.)

“Don’t you ever get serious?”
“I could get serious with you…!”
[Batman Family V1 #13] Oooh…

Adorable babies

You know what I love about this scene? Other than, um, everything about it, I mean.
I must have literally read it a dozen times before I finally noticed that Dick sneakily asks her out there at the end. And she says yes, to boot. Of course, there’s no doubt that it’s a non-date date (the first of many) since they were just friends at this point (or, as Babs puts it, in a “business relationship”), but it’s still a cool thing to notice. Especially since I’m pretty sure this is probably the first time Dick ever canonically asked Babs out. And I didn’t even notice, because he just drops it in there so casually at the end. Very smooth, Grayson. Really. I’m actually not being sarcastic for once.
(Of course, in the rest of this scene he is the exact opposite of smooth… which is exactly why I love it. It’s very true to life for a teenager with his first major crush. I love the way he immediately backs down when she calls him out on flirting with her. He’s trying much too hard to come off as confident and sure of himself, but he’s pretty clueless about how this flirting thing actually works, and incredibly insecure underneath it all. Which, again, makes total sense for a kid that age with a crush. It’s one of the things I most enjoy about Dick and Babs from this era. Which is why I seriously dislike DC’s tendency to retcon this dynamic.)

Babs doing the Superman Shirt Rip = AWESOME.

"One of the most awesome crime-fighting teams ever" is correct!
LOL, I love how in the first panel Babs is all “Oooh, I feel faint!”, but her expression is totally “Okay, how quickly can I get this stupid kid out of here so I can save the day?” ROFL. Babs, sweetie, you’re… you’re not very good at this whole damsel-in-distress act. And I love you all the more for it.
Also, both of them doing the whole Superman-shirt-rip thing is pretty cool. (Naturally, Dick has to do it more dramatically. Of course.)

I think Babs ages like every woman dreams of. She went from being at least 25, probably a little older (to be a congresswoman she had to at least be 25) to currently being, all these years later, about 21.

She was 25 here. This is issue #1 of the Batman Family series, and in issue #10 of that same series she explicitly refers to herself as being 25.
Of course, that’s still kind of problematic because when she was introduced roughly a decade earlier, she already had her PhD, which should have already made her around 25. And you can’t just say that none of the characters aged in that time, because Dick went from being somewhere around 16(?) to 18 and in college in that same time period.
So either she got her PhD early by skipping some grades (which is certainly possible - she’s definitely smart enough, and when her origin was retold post-Crisis in Secret Origins #20, Flawed Gems, her skipping grades was made canon. But that origin story also made no reference to her having had a PhD when she became Batgirl, just that she had already graduated from college) or else they had already started retconning her age down a little.
And that concludes your lesson in “The History of Babs and Dick and Their Ever-Decreasing Age Difference” for today, kids. XD
What I actually find the most interesting about these panels is that it’s a rare instance where we see Barbara’s opinion of Dick based purely on his civilian identity, before she figured out that he was the same kid who fought crime with her in short-pants. She obviously thinks highly of him, and bonded with him quickly enough that she’s disappointed that he has to go back to college. I like the fact that they worked well together and immediately took to each other out-of-costume as well as in. I think it says a lot about why they’re so perfect for each other. They didn’t just make a great team because they happened to be Robin and Batgirl at the same time. They made a great team because of who they were.
It’s also pretty interesting to hear Barbara saying that she hopes Dick will turn out to be “more than a worthless playboy”, since he kinda does have something of a reputation as a playboy these days (albeit not a worthless one). That’s still not how I interpret his character personally, but I know that others do see him that way.

“Hey Batgirl…Do you pick up…hitch-hikers?”
[Batman Family #1]
The first team-up of  “The Dynamite Duo.” My goodness these two are fabulously perfect. Who would want to re-con all of this?
(P.S Dick’s legs are also fabulous.)
[Thoroughly-Family Thursdays on Holyisms to Goddamn]

Only a crazy person would want to retcon this. THEY ARE MADE OF AWESOME.
For some reason Babs saying “We’re being fired upon!” is cracking me up. I think because it’s such a formal way of phrasing it. Now that is dedication to proper grammar, people. It doesn’t matter if people are shooting bullets at you, you’d better be darn sure you’re using the correct phrasing to describe the situation.
It must be the librarian in her XD
And then of course we have Dick, who thinks using phrases like “Great galloping gazebos!” is an actual way that human beings talk.

Let’s all spare a thought for poor Lori Elton.

Vintage Dick & Babs!
I have to admit, while this is cute, what makes it so awesome to me IS Lori. Because she is such a Lavender Brown, only twenty years before Lavender Brown was a thought in J.K. Rowling’s mind. She is so jealous and territorial, and I probably should feel bad for her (because who wouldn’t get possessive if a gorgeous and awesome redhead was hugging their boyfriend?), but instead I just want to laugh and laugh.
Although I do enjoy how Babs is all “Oh… uh, hey there, Random Blondie. I totally didn’t see you there” in the second panel. BURN! Babs is too cool for these games, y’all.
(Also: Now I’m mentally finishing that sentence different ways. “Oh… uh, hey there Random Blondie. I totally didn’t see you there, because I was too busy being awesome.” “Oh… uh, hey there, Random Blondie. I totally didn’t see you there, because I was too busy hugging my future soulmate.” XD I am so weird.)
And Dick is just like “… Well, this is awkward.” LOL.
Also: I totally want Barbara’s yellow coat-dress.
(I should also probably clarify that I know next to nothing about Lori Elton, and it’s possible that she was an amazing and well-rounded character and she and Dick had a beautiful relationship. But until proven otherwise, my head-canon is that she was a Lavender Brown clone who, like, gave Dick lockets with their initials on it, and went around shrieking “I HAPPEN to be his girlfriend!” all the time. BECAUSE I SAID SO. Do not disabuse me of my head-canons!)
