“Dick Grayson is my favorite—in any role. But I HATE early ’90s Nightwing—both comics and animated series. I hate his sour/angsty attitude, his weird costumes, and, most of all, his horrid mullet.”

Dear lord, YES. EXACTLY.
I mean, the mullet and the costume aren’t the worst part for me, though I don’t like them. But whatever, it’s just fashion, goodness knows Dick’s had questionable looks before.
But seriously, WHY WOULD YOU MESS WITH DICK’S PERSONALITY THAT WAY.
I still remember reading New Titans #101 and thinking “When you’ve managed to write a comic that makes me want to smack Dick Grayson in the face repeatedly, you are doing something extremely wrong”.
And I think that says it all, really.

“I’m not a big Stephanie fan and I wish people would respect that rather than bash me and other people like me for it.”

… Don’t you just love it when people try to play victim. *shrugs*

Really? I’m a Steph fan but I’ve still seen this around:

I’d say the anon has a valid complaint. Yes, I know it’s not every Steph fan and most Steph fans are normal, nice people. But the anon doesn’t seem to be blaming every Steph fan, and this shit does exist on tumblr.

That is just a troll and you know it.
See, the thing is that I don’t believe the anon got bashed just because he/she doesn’t like Steph. Steph has the most polarized fanbase — you either like her or you don’t. She has gotten haters since waaay back during her Spoiler years in the Robin series. She still gets her detractors, have you seen Bleedingcool and Outhousers forums? She’s only mostly liked on Tumblr. I also don’t believe that Steph fans would have time bashing fans for not liking her because they’re all busy trying to DEFEND her from haters (which come to think of it, that’s probably how they came to think of us as ‘bashing’ them. Like possibly this anon.)
So what if they don’t like Steph. Congratulations! They’re one of the 50% of comic readers who don’t like her! How does it feel like to be in the mainstream? So stop trying to play the victim, push the blame on Steph fans and try to make us look bad.

So maybe it is a troll. We don’t know that. I wish I could say I knew that there were no fans who thought that way, but sadly from what I’ve seen, that is not true at ALL. In any fanbase. There are idiotic fans everywhere, in every part of fandom. Unfortunately, that person could easily have been 100% serious with what they wrote. But even if you’re right, and they were not- it doesn’t really make the hate easier to deal with, does it?
Stephanie certainly has a lot of haters. But I have seen some genuine Steph fans who go too far the other way, and seem to think that there is no valid reason not to like Steph, and anyone who doesn’t is just sexist, etc., etc. I’ll be honest - I love the girl, and I don’t see how anyone could not see how awesome she is. But, y’know, sometimes a character just isn’t someone’s cup of tea. And that’s totally fair. I don’t think people deserve to get bashed for that.
I think it’s also a bit hard for people who actually like Barbara as Batgirl. Unfortunately, a lot of Steph fans seem to have responded to what happened by deciding they hate Babsgirl, which is more than a bit unfair. Even as someone who wishes with all my heart that Steph was still Batgirl and Babs was still Oracle, I still find myself wanting to yell “It’s not Barbara’s fault!” sometimes. I completely understand where the hate is coming from, but it’s a bit hard to take if you’re a Babs fan at all, and I imagine it’s that much worse if you’re a fan of Babs as Batgirl.
I also really, really don’t get the argument (which people seem to make on tumblr all the time) that if your opinion is “mainstream” it’s totally fine for people to bash you for it? That’s… not how it works. You’re supposed to be polite about other people’s beliefs and opinions because it’s the respectful thing to do, whether they’re minority or mainstream. When did people who are too “mainstream” stop having the right to basic decency?

“The replacing of Stephanie Brown with Barbara Gordon in an upcoming story arc of Smallville has been handled by those in charge has made me completely sure of one thing: I’m DONE with DC Comics. There are so many things I love about the DCU and still several books that I appreciate and enjoy, but I WON’T support a company that has such an utter lack of respect for its characters, fans, AND creators.”

Complete and utter over-kill reaction. If you actually spent 0.99c and read it, you’d understand that characters aside, it’s a phenomenal piece of art (writing, story, art, everything)
I will support DC, and not throw a god damn tantrum! Did Babs fans kick hissy fits like this when they striped her of her Batgirl title. NO. DC is handling the reboot well, very well.
I want to ask all those butt sore Steph fans, where were the black-cards, torches and pitchforks when they KILLED Stephanie? She is benched, like many other wonderful characters. Wait your god damn fucking turn and she will appear.
Babs fans had to wait 20 years before we got to see our Batgirl in the cowl again.
JUST THINK ABOUT THAT BEFORE SOUNDING LIKE SPOILED BRATS!

“Did Babs fans kick hissy fits like this when they striped her of her Batgirl title.”
Yes. And there were plenty that hated Cass for daring to take “her place”.
“I want to ask all those butt sore Steph fans, where were the black-cards, torches and pitchforks when they KILLED Stephanie?”
Starting a campaign that brought her back
“Babs fans had to wait 20 years before we got to see our Batgirl in the cowl again. ”
Cry me a river. Babs appeared as Batgirl in plenty of flashbacks. Not to mention merchandising and cartoons.
“JUST THINK ABOUT THAT BEFORE SOUNDING LIKE SPOILED BRATS!”
I sense irony here

This is why you can’t have nice things.

Yeah, people like you is why we can’t have nice things. Here’s an idea: don’t talk about things you know nothing about.

Actually I didn’t think I would have to spell it out but you’re this reason, or at least whinny people like you are. And here’s another good piece of advice, practice what you preach before judging others.

I don’t go whine in the Barbara Gordon tag, I keep my complains to my personal blog. The only reason I responded to you was because this 1) appeared in the Steph tag and 2) you were incorrect about what Steph fans did after she was killed.
You like Babsgirl? Good for you. I couldn’t care less. But don’t go insult other fans because they disagree with you. And don’t pull shit out of your ass.
I’m done with you.

As over as this whole argument is, can I point out the absurdity of acting as if Babs WAS BENCHED when she was Oracle? Like that is such ableist nonsense I can’t even. And acting as if the majority of her fans WANTED her to stop being Oracle. I don’t know but as a HUGE Orale fan who was and still is really upset about Babsgirl being a thing again because it meant not only deaging Babs but also taking away her experience and competency (fuck guys even the last time she was in the cowl she had things like being a US congresswoman under her belt). Also (shocker) a whole lot of Babs fans protested when they decided to undo all she has done. To just take her out of the chair when she had made it clear she was comfortable with who she was.
Basically here we had a character with a disability who was really fucking badass, and you look at that and think it is the SAME THING as a character DC refuses to acknowelege ever existed? THAT IS REALLY FUCKED UP.

THANK YOU. Both of you. I was going to write a reply to thedarkdamsel’s comment myself, but I’m glad to see you and Gab have already done it for me. You said everything I wanted to.

“I don’t dislike Cassie Sandsmark, she’s just not one of my favorite characters. I would like her better if she were written better more often. And in every comic I’ve ever read with Cassie in it, her only “love interest” seemed to be Superboy. That alone would make up for it a little-if she’d been interested in more than one person her entire life. And I don’t think Tim Drake counts.”

I was totally on board with this until “written better” was defined as “having more love interests”. Really?! That’s not what makes a character better or worse. What matters is how well-developed and compelling the relationships are, not how many. And defining a character by their love life is silly anyway. That’s only a small part of what makes a character who they are. What about having strong, consistent characterization, an interesting personality, or compelling internal struggles? I’d say that’s a lot more important to defining how “well-written” a character is than how many love interests they have.
And also… Cassie is a teenager. How many people do you want her to have been interested in in her life? Her life hasn’t been that long, for goodness’ sakes! I mean, personally I think there’s nothing wrong with having only one main love interest anyway, as long as the relationship is strong enough to merit it and the writers keep things interesting (frankly, I’d rather see more longterm, meaningful relationships than so many Love Interests of the Week), but especially for a character as young as Cassie, it’s perfectly normal for her to have had only one serious relationship. The idea that there’s something wrong with that or that it makes her a lesser character somehow is rather disturbing to me.
Now, whether you think Cassie and Conner’s relationship is interesting enough to merit that kind of longevity is another matter, and there’s certainly a bothersome double standard in that he’s had plenty of other love interests and she hasn’t. But the basic fact that Cassie’s only had one main love interest is not, IMO, one of the main problems with how her character’s been written over the years. Having more love interests doesn’t make you a better character.
