Today’s the first day of voting in the DCWKA Favorite DC Couples Contest (dum dum dum!) And because it involves shipping of characters it is already shaping up to be a fustercluck of fan wank. Or just fun. YOU DECIDE! So before we begin some clarifications and background.
Over three days on…
Kate Kane/Maggie Sawyer and Joker/Harley for me.
Even though I hate that DCnU got rid of Renee, I do like that Kate’s relationship with Maggie has been depicted respectfully and non-exploitive of the two women. I also like that Maggie gets to be her own character with her own agenda (ironically to capture Batwoman) and is fleshed out as opposed to being relegated to Kate’s plus one.
So yes, +1 for positive portrayal of an LGBT couple where both partners actually get to be alive and part of each other’s lives.
Even though I’m not a fan of Joker/Harley for the abusive nature of their relationship, it is also undeniable that without the Joker, Harley wouldn’t exist. It especially makes him a fixed and crucial point in her origin.
There’s also the fact that I don’t know enough about Wally/Iris to give them my vote. Was never a fan of the Flash. :/
So now that you’ve made it clear that you’ve voted against Helena Bertinelli twice in a DCWKA tournament, will you promise not to complain and to chalk it up to some grand conspiracy when someone votes against Helena Wayne because they like the other couple she’s against? ;)
Pairings and single characters are two separate animals, mate. In the case of pairings it’s less about ‘Oh x is not y character? VOTE AGAINST!!’ and more about ‘I SHIP IT!’ ;)
Also, there are more chances to vote on these characters depending on the pair. Excellent case in point, if it was Renee/Bertinelli vs Renee/Kate I’d go with Renee/Bertinelli. They had better chemistry, imo. :P
(But that’s a case of canon vs non-canon, so that’d never happen). :(
I don’t think it should be about who you’re voting AGAINST whether we’re talking about individual characters or pairings. I think it should be about who you’re voting FOR. Yeah, we all have those characters and pairings we dislike, and obviously we’re not going to be voting for those. But the focus needs to be on voting for the character/pairing that you like better, not voting against the one you like less. Otherwise it just turns into hate and bashing, and that makes fandom unpleasant for everyone.
I voted for Kate/Maggie as well, but I don’t consider that a vote “against” Helena Bertinelli. I love Helena. In fact, if I were voting for which character I like better, Helena would probably have my vote over Kate or Maggie (which isn’t to say I dislike either of them - I just love Helena more). But when we’re talking about relationships, Kate and Maggie get my vote. I feel that they’re both more functional and better suited to one another than Helena and Thomas are. That doesn’t mean I’m ‘voting against’ Helena, it just means that when it comes to these specific relationships, Kate and Maggie get my vote. (For the record, if it had been Helena and Vic, that might just have gone differently. It would’ve been a much closer call, at any rate.)
In other news: I was pleasantly surprised to see that when I voted, Barry/Iris were in the lead over Harley/Joker. Heck yeah, healthy relationships! ;-) Don’t get me wrong, I find Harley/Joker interesting (and, in fact, weirdly adorable) at times, but I hate the fact that DC broke up Barry and Iris (along with other happily married couples such as Clark/Lois and Wally/Linda) because supposedly healthy, committed couples are “boring”. So to see Barry and Iris winning, especially over a couple who is arguably far better known and more prominent than they are, is just really satisfying for me. Go Barry and Iris! :-)
Of course, I’m assuming we all know which couple I’m rooting for in the long haul… ;-)
